RAPID CITY — The Huron boys’ tennis team finished fourth in the Class A State Tournament, which concluded Tuesday in Rapid City.
The Tigers racked up 261.5 points to finish just 3.5 points out of third place in the 11-team event.
“I am proud of how well the boys competed in singles and doubles. They had a great season and topped it off with a 4th place finish at state,” Huron coach Tim Hedblom. “I am very proud of everything this team accomplished.”
Sioux Falls Christian claimed its third straight Class A championship with 600 points, while Rapid City Christian was second at 382.
St. Thomas More was third 358, followed by Huron and Pierre at 255.5.
The Tigers had a pair players reach the championship match in singles and a doubles team playing for a state title.
Riley Winegar at No. 5 and Jeremiah Notario at No. 6 advanced to the title match for Huron in singles.
Winegar, who was seeded third, received a bye in the opening round and defeated sixth-seeded Henry Schulte of Vermillion 10-1 in the quarter finals. He upset second-seeded Marius Whitman of Rapid City Christian 6-7 (6), 6-1, 10-8 to reach the championship match.
Top-seeded Jack Squire of Sioux Falls Christian used back-to-back 6-1 set wins against Winegar to claim the state title at No. 5.
Notario was the second seed for the Tigers at No. 6. After receiving a bye in the opening round, he won 10-3 against Ethan Pickel of Vermion to reach the semifinals. Notario got past third-seeded Braeden Strain of St. Thomas More 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 to reach the finals, where top-seeded Jacob Woodward of Sioux Falls Christian inked 6-3 and 6-2 set wins to claim the championship.
Huron’s No. 3 doubles team of Winegar and Jim Wah made a run at a state title.
The Tigers received a bye in the opening round and then defeated sixth-seeded Lennox 10-1 in the quarterfinals. Winegar and Wah recorded a 10-4 victory against second-seeded St. Thomas More in the semifinals.
Sioux Falls Christian, which was the top seed in No. 3 doubles handed the Huron duo back-to-back 6-2, 6-2 set losses to put them second.
Lah Gay Soe in No. 2 singles and Ywa Hae K Moo in No. 4 singles were fifth for the Tigers, while Huron’s No. 2 doubles team of Soe and Notario were fifth and the No. 1 doubles team of Zan and Htoo won the consolation championship.
“As a team, we had a great tournament,” Hedblom said.
