HURON –– Scott Deboer, Activities Director, presented the Good News Report on Monday at the Huron School Board meeting.

He highlighted hosting the State Cross Country meet at Broadland Creek Golf Course as an event that the school would like to do again. He stated that the first full year with the new scoreboards has had a learning curve, but they’ve added significantly to football, basketball, volleyball and track events, both for the Huron School District and other schools utilizing Huron facilities.

Deboer highlighted the team successes in football and boys’ basketball as well as finishing fourth at the boys’ tennis state tournament.

He then discussed the strong showing by the Huron music and drama departments over the year, with many students achieving All-State recognition as well as strong plays and concerts throughout the year.

Deboer named what he sees as the core values of the activities program in the Huron district: being competitive on a statewide basis, remaining composed, being relationship-driven, being grateful for opportunities, and being an example for generations to come.

Looking forward, Deboer noted that the school will hold the state debate championships next year, then in 2027-2028, the district will hold state cross country and state soccer in consecutive weeks before hosting state basketball in the spring of 2028. Homecoming for 2026-2027 is set for the week leading up to September 25.

Superintendent Dr. Kraig Steinhoff reminded board members and the public that the school is hosting an open house walk-through of the new addition at Huron High School on Wednesday, May 27, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The board then reviewed new policies. The first was a policy regarding the home liaison. Steinhoff noted that the policy is new, but the position of home liaison is something the district has had for some time.

The bus driver supervisor policy was introduced as the position is new and did not have set policies in place. A new position of transportation manager was presented with new policies that would allow the board to move forward to look for a permanent manager for the role.

Those new job positions led to a change in policy in the organizational chart. Each of the policies was simply introduced at this meeting. They will have an official first reading at the next board meeting.

The board also:

– Approved six hires.

– Approved six resignations

– Approved four contracts.

– Approved a contract for services between Huron School District and Professional Speech Therapists, LLC.
