To the editor:
John Thune, Mike Rounds and Dusty Johnson were elected by the people of South Dakota to represent us in the US Congress. We placed our trust in these men to ensure the Federal Government serves our needs and to provide the Constitutionally mandated checks and balances on the other two branches of the Federal Government. Have these men lost their way?
In the 16 months since he took office for the second time, Donald Trump, the convicted felon, has started a war with no attempt to secure the support of the American people. He has levied taxes via tariffs that were determined to be illegal by the US Supreme Court. He has attacked the free press as “traitors” for reporting on his actions. He has generally acted in his own self-interest instead of the interests of the people of the United States.
Trump has sued the Federal Government (i.e., you and me) and then, through his Department of Justice, settled the lawsuit by granting himself and his family lifelong protection against any IRS audits and setting up a nearly $2 billion fund to allow anyone to claim funds for abuses. A panel hand-picked by Trump and subject to dismissal by Trump for any reason will decide who gets this money.
At what point will our elected representatives decide to provide their constitutionally mandated checks on the out-of-control Trump presidency? At what point will the rank-and-file Republicans decide that Trump is damaging our country? At what point will the MAGA crowd realize that preserving the freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution is more important than attacking the tiny number of people who are transgender? I hope that the realization comes before it is too late.
