SIOUX FALLS — Four area volleyball players have been invited to participate in the Future 40 Elite Volleyball Camp, which will be held Sunday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
In conjunction with the individual camp, volleyball teams from Huron and Miller will be participating in the 2018 Summer Slam Tournament, which is slated for Monday and Tuesday.
“One of the goals of this event is to spread enthusiasm and attract a bigger fan base for this growing sport,” Huron coach Shelly Buddenhagen said of the pair of activities, which is being put on by Adrenaline Fundraising. “Other states have events similar to this and this group of organizers wanted to offer the same opportunities for the players in this state and region.”
Participating in the South Dakota Future 40 Elite Camp will be Hollee Niehus and Havyn Heinz of Huron, along with Kadye Fernholz and VonnaGail Schlechter of Miller.
“The Future 40 is an invite only camp and will be a one-day camp, where athletes participate in individual skills and team drills. The concept might be considered similar to a “combine” for football players,” Buddenhagen said. “Some college coaches will be present for recruiting purposes.”
The general public is also invited to watch the Future 40 Elite Camp, which runs from 1-8:30 p.m. on Sunday. Matches involving the participants will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
The Summer Slam Tournament will involve 40 teams. There will be 20 teams, including all three of the defending champions from South Dakota; seven teams from Minnesota, five teams from Iowa and a team from Nebraska.
“We are excited as this will be a great way to end our summer, but it also will be a great springboard into our preseason practices, which begin Aug. 9,” Buddenhagen said.
Round-robin play will be held Monday. Huron will face Ridge View (11 a.m.) Minneota (1 p.m.), Fargo Shanley (4 p.m.) and Bismarck (6 p.m.) Miller will play Minneota (10 a.m.), Bismarck (1 p.m.), Russell-Tyler Ruthton (4 p.m.) and Marshall (6 p.m.).
The tournament is also open to the public, but an admission fee will be charged.
Matchups up for Tuesday’s portion of the tournament will be determined by Monday’s results. The championship of the event will be televised on Midco Sports Network.
