Aberdeen claims state girls’ hockey title

HURON — A pair of offensive powerhouses squared off for the championship during the 2018 South Dakota Girls’ Varsity State Hockey Tournament on Sunday at Bergman Arena.
The top-seeded Aberdeen Lady Cougars had 11 of the 17 goals in the game to secure the state title with an 11-6 victory.
Kensington Eckhoff and Kaitlyn Holland each recorded hat tricks for Aberdeen.
Eckhoff finished with seven goals, while Holland had three goals.
Haiden Soltenberg had the other goal for the Lady Cougars, who scored the final four goals of the game after carrying just a 7-6 advantage into the final period.
Eckhoff also had three assists for Aberdeen, while Morgan Dean had two assists. Also recording an assist each were Rhiannon Abel, Emma Ahlberg and Holland.
Hailey Huff stopped 23 of the 29 shots she faced as the goalie for the Lady Cougars.
Jadyn Peterson and Elli Hegdahl each had a pair of goals for Brookings, while Brooklyn Robers and Addison Ramlo each had a goal.
Bethany Rennich tallied four assists for the Lady Rangers, while Peterson had two assists and Carlie Kruse had an assist.
Jadyn Runge stopped 33 shots she faced in the net for Brookings.
Third place
The Sioux Falls Lady Flyers scored the first two goals of the game and made them hold up for a 2-1 victory against the Mitchell Lady Marlins to claim third place.
Chloe Harbaugh capitalized on a power play to score the lone goal of the opening period for Sioux Falls. She was assisted on the play, which came with just 21 seconds remaining in the period, by Kaitlyn Vockler.

The Lady Flyers went up 2-0 with a goal by Grace Halverson in the second period. Faith Halvorson and Gabriella Schroder combined on the assist.
Mitchell’s lone goal also came in the second period, as Kelsey Amick scored on an unassisted shot.
Both goalies tallied shutouts in the final period, allowing Sioux Falls to escape with the victory.
Ava Krabbenhoft recorded 21 saves to earn the win as the goalie for the Lady Flyers. Katelyn Uithoven stopped 25 shots as the gaolie for Mitchell.
Fifth place
With a goal in each period, the Watertown Lady Lakers recorded a 3-2 victory against the Rushmore Lady Thunder in the consolation championship game.
Rushmore opened the scoring with a goal by Angeline Rasby, who scored on a pass from America Clark.
It appeared that the Lady Thunder would carry that 1-0 lead into the second period, but Watertown found the net on a power play with just two seconds remaining in the opening period. Tiffany Hamann had the goal, with Kendra Kranz and Kaitlyn Kunkel combining for the assist.
Watertown took its first lead of the game as Jaclyn Lloyd scored on a pass from Tessa Holien just over five minutes into the second period.
As the Lady Lakers did in the opening period, Rushmore answered to even the game at 2-2 heading into the final period. Rasby scored her second goal of the game on a pass from Shila Simpson.
Hamann secured the victory for Watertown with her second goal of the game on an unassisted shot during a short-handed situation.
Sydnie Young faced just 10 shots as the goalie for the Lady Lakers and stopped eight of them to earn the win. Madyson Herman faced 54 shots in the net for Rushmore and turned away 51 of them.
Seventh place
The Oahe Lady Capitals scored the first seven goals of the game en route to a 7-3 victory against the Omaha Lady Lancers in the seventh-place game.
Olivia Swenson and Amy Gilkerson each had a pair of goals for Oahe. Also scoring a goal each were Layna Tibbs, Sara Bierne and Jenna Keyser.
Gilkerson had two assists and was one of seven players with assists for the Lady Capitals. Also recording an assist each were Bierne, Alyssa Stahl, Jessa McTighe, Tibbs, Julia Snoeijen and Brooklyn Herman.
Charlotte Scholz had a pair of goals for the Lady Lancers, while Emma Roblyer had the other goal. Molly Whitehead and Staci Chamberlin each had an assist.
Mariah Nelson had 23 saves for Oahe to collect the win in the net, while Jennifer Baulisch stopped 32 of 39 shots she faced for Omaha.
