Area track and field hits mid-point in season

Several Heartland-area track and field teams were in action, as the spring season approaches its unofficial halfway point with this weekend’s Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls.
Huron competed in Brookings at the Bob Coffey Meet on Tuesday. While the Tigers didn’t have an individual event win, several relay teams garnered second place finishes in the five-team event.

Dwight Kinney Invitational

ESTELLINE — Local individuals claimed first place in seven events at the Dwight Kinney Invitational, held on Tuesday at Estelline.

Hitchcock-Tulare’s Ty Hofer dominated the boys’ hurdle events as he took first in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.61 and for the 300-meter hurdles, where he finished with 44.80 to take first.
Both the boys’ and girls’ Clark-Willow Lake Cyclones teams took first place in their respective 1,600-meter sprint medley event. The girls finished with a time of 5:06.64, while the boys crossed the line at 4:04.60 for the Cyclones. The Iroquois girls’ team claim second place in the 1,600 medley, taking a time of 5:16.15 to finish the race.
Also finishing first for the Cyclones was Justus Reidburn in the boys’ 100-meter dash at 11.32, while Jeffrey Paulson leaped a distance of 19-feet, 1/2-inch to finish first in the long jump event.
Iroquois’ Jacob Bich landed an impressive distance of 37-2.50 to take first place in the boys’ triple jump event

Sioux Valley Invite
VOLGA — Koby Spader of the De Smet Bulldogs placed first in two events at the Sioux Valley Invitational, held Tuesday at Volga.
Spader threw a distance of 46-5.25 in the shot put event to claim first, while in the discus event Spader’s first place was earned by a 137-03 distance.
Baylor Beck made it to the finish line in 4 minutes 51 seconds to take first place in the 1,600-meter run for the Bulldogs.
The 3,200-meter relay De Smet team consisted of Dakota Barnard, Ethan McCune, Kalen Garry and Rett Osthus, who worked together to finish at a time of 9 minutes 11.2 seconds and emerge with first place.
