Aberdeen defeats No. 1 Renner to reach title game

HURON — Behind a complete-game effort on the mound by Drew Cole, Brookings avenged an opening-round loss to Huron Post 7, with a 12-1 victory in seven innings on Thursday during the Region 1A American Legion Baseball Tournament at Memorial Park Stadium.
Cole limited Huron to just two hits during the game, which was ended with the 10-run rule being implemented. He recorded four strikeouts and had a pair of walks to help the Bandits stay alive in the tournament.
After putting up a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, Brookings broke the game open with seven runs in the fith inning to take an 11-0 lead.
The Bandits scored their final run in the sixth inning, before Post 7 got on the board in the final inning.
Akren Prodoehl had three of the nine hits in the game for Brookings, while Cody Niklason and Brandon Nelson each had a pair of hits.
A double by Matt Katz drove in the lone run for Huron, as Walker Schiltz scored on the play. Chipper Shillingstad accounted for Post 7’s other hit.

Deion Waddle started on the mound for Huron and pitched the first 4 2/3 innings. He allowed 10 runs on five hits, with two srikeouts and five walks. Schiltz pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
Brookings faced top-seeded Renner in an elimination game later Thursday evening and came up on the short end of a 9-4 final score. The loss eliminated Post 7 from the tourney.

Aberdeen 6, Renner 3
HURON — Third-seeded Aberdeen earned a spot in the the championship game with a 6-3 win against Renner on Friday.
Aberdeen scored all six of its runs in the final three innings after falling behind 1-0.
Alex Heyd recorded three hits to lead Aberdeen, while Derek Hunstad and Victory Padilla each had a pair of hits.
Aberdeen finished with 11 hits, compared to five for Renner.
Nick Hoekstra highlighted the attack for Renner with a two-run home run, while Peyton Garbers and Quentin Evers each had doubles.
Aberdeen will face Renner, which defeated Brookings 9-4, for the Region 1A title at 1 p.m. today at Memorial Stadium. A second game will follow if necessary.
