HURON — The Wessington Springs Spartans won the title in the boys’ 281 Conference basketball tournament, posting a 61-47 win over the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks Thursday night at Huron Arena.
The Spartans jumped out to a 21-16 lead after the first quarter, due in large part to 6-foot sophomore Parker Graff. Graff scored 11 of Wessington Springs’ 21 points in the opening stanza.
SC/W mounted a couple of mini-charges, but couldn’t get shots to fall and Wessington Springs was only allowing the Blackhawks one shot. Bright spots for Sanborn Central/Woonsocket included the bench play of both McCoy Schultz and Landon Jensen, as they ended with 13 of the Blackhawks’ 24 first-half points, as Wessington Springs held a 34-24 lead at the halftime break.
SC/W came out firing in the third quarter, cutting the margin to four points, 41-37 after three quarters to play, as they limited the opportunities for the Spartans in the period.
Wessington Springs re-established its lead, going on a 13-2 run over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, as the Blackhawks went cold from the field at the worst possible time and the Spartans hit free throws down the stretch and held on for the win.
Graff scored 24 points to lead the Spartans and Ryder Michaelek added 16.
Bryce Larson scored nine points for Sanborn Central/Woonsocket.
Wessington Springs goes to 9-1 with the win and will travel to Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Tuesday, while the Blackhawks, who fall to 4-6, are on the road at Hanson Tuesday.
