HURON — After snapping a seven-game winning streak on Tuesday in a loss against Harrisburg, the second-ranked Sioux Falls Jefferson Cavaliers are now in a losing streak, as the Huron Tigers held on for a 50-48 overtime victory Saturday at Huron Arena.

The win moves the Tigers to 4-6 while Jefferson falls to 9-3.

Defense was the name of the game from the opening tip for both clubs. After a pair of empty possessions, Jefferson freshman Brinley Altenburg opened scoring with a pull-up jumper in the lane.

Hylton Heinz answered for Huron with a drive into the lane and a quick pull-up jumper. Sister Hamtyn Heinz then took the ball hard to the hoop the next possession and made one of two free throws to give Huron its first lead at 3-2.

On the press break of Jefferson’s aggressive full-court press, Hamtyn Heinz found Makenzie Siemonsma underneath for a quick bucket.

Jefferson post Jaidyn Dunn was fouled after taking away a Tiger rebound and made two free throws to bring it to 5-4 Huron.

Hylton Heinz then drove hard to the hoop and was fouled, nailing both free throws, but Altenburg answered with a corner three to knot the score at 7-7 with a minute left in the first.

After an empty possession for Huron, Altenburg faked a three, drove, and pulled up for a 10-foot jumper to make it 9-7 Cavaliers at the end of the first.

Hylton would take a pass from Siemonsma and drive all the way in without a challenge to tie the game back up, but Dunn made a strong move in the lane, drew multiple Tiger defenders, and then dished off to Ashlen Johnson under the hoop for an easy bucket.

Liz Heinen set a strong pick and then rolled for the easy bucket off a pass from Hamtyn Heinz to make it 11-11. Jefferson point guard Aliyah McGovern-Harrinton then cut into the lane and made the basket to give the Cavaliers the lead again at 13-11.

That’s when the Tigers went on a strong run to end the half.

Hamtyn Heinz drove to the hoop and got a bucket, and Hylton followed up by getting her own rebound and getting fouled on the putback attempt. Hylton made one of two free throws, giving the Tigers its first lead of the second quarter with three minutes remaining in the half.

Kamryn Whiting came off the bench and made a bucket, but missed the foul shot for Jefferson. Aly Davis then drove the right side of the offense for Huron and made a bank shot to make it 16-15 Huron.

Hamtyn Heinz hit the first Tigers three-point shot attempt of the game to make it 19-15, but Johnson was able to secure an offensive rebound for Jefferson and made one of two foul shots after being fouled on the putback attempt.

With 30 seconds left in the half after the free throws, Huron coach Kody Kopfmann drew up a play for Huron. After working the ball around the offense, Hamtyn Heinz nailed a corner three to make it 22-16 Huron at half.

Dunn opened the second half with a leaner around Siemonsma, Altemburg got a runner in the lane, and then Dunn hit one of two free throws to bring Jefferson quickly within one at 22-21.

Hamtyn Heinz nailed a three to push Huron’s lead to 25-21, but McGovern-Harrington stole a pass in the backcourt and went in for the layup to trim the Tiger lead to 25-23.

Davis drove in and was fouled by McGovern-Harrington, hitting one of two free throws. Altenburg answered with a free throw line jump shot to be the first Cav in double figures with 11 points.

After a pair of empty possessions for both teams, Altenburg pulled up on the drive and nailed a jumper to give Jefferson their first lead of the second half at 27-26.

Hamtyn Heinz answered with a pair of free throws after being fouled on the drive and Siemonsma hit one of two after she was fouled to push the Huron lead to 29-27.

After a pair of Ava Silvernail free throws tied the game at 29, Hamtyn Heinz hit four free throws, including three when she was fouled on a long buzzer 3-point attempt, to put Huron up 33-29 heading into the final period.

After a Huron turnover on their first possession, Hamtyn grabbed a rebound and went coast-to-coast for a bucket to match Huron’s largest lead of the game at 35-29.

Altenburg responded with a very long three. Heinen sealed off on an inbounds pass and hit the reverse layup, but Dunn answered with a bucket underneath.

Heinen then got another short-range basket as Hylton Heinz drove and dished to the Huron post, but Dunn was fouled working underneath and hit one of two free throws.

Huron had an empty possession and then the lefty Altenburg nailed another deep shot to bring the Cavaliers within 39-38.

Hamtyn Heinz responded with her third three-point basket. Altenburg hit one of two free throws and Siemonsma sealed off the defender on an inbound pass and put it in to give Huron a 44-39 lead with just under two minutes remaining.

The Jefferson offense worked the ball around and after two missed shots and offensive rebounds, Dunn hit a putback and was fouled. She nailed the free throw, to make it 44-42 in favor of Huron.

Johnson tied the score with a jumper from the free throw line with thirty seconds left. Huron worked down the shot clock, but couldn’t get a clean shot at the hoop, and Jefferson missed a long heave at the regulation buzzer to send the game to overtime at 44-44.

Heinen made a move to get Dunn off-balance and hit a short jumper to open overtime scoring for Huron, but Dunn got the bucket on the other end as Johnson drove, drew the defense, and wrapped a pass around the Huron defense to Dunn.

Davis hit one of two free throws, but Dunn answered with a pair of free throws after a Heinen foul to give Jefferson a 48-47 lead.

After multiple empty possessions for both teams, Hamtyn Heinz juked Dunn out of position, drove down the lane, and banked home a basket to give Huron the lead.

Jefferson turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, and Hamtyn hit one of two free throws with two seconds remaining and the Tigers prevented a clean look on the Jefferson heave, sealing a 50-48 upset victory.

Coach Kopfmann was enthusiastic about his team’s play.

“This was a signature win,” he stated. “We fought and we kept battling and battling. That was fun!”

Hamtyn Heinz led the Tigers with 26 points and seven rebounds. Heinen had eight and Hylton Heinz scored seven.

Kopfmann noted that the Tigers outrebounded the Cavs and shot 50 percent on the game.

“We found ways to compete,” Kopfmann said. “That’s a great win on both sides of the ball for us.”

The Cavaliers were led by Altenburg with 20 points. Dunn added 15 points and nine rebounds.

Huron took the sophomore game 52-48.

The Tigers will host Watertown on Tuesday.
