Tigers finish second in Watertown

WATERTOWN — The Huron Tiger gymnastics team had one of its best nights of the season Monday during a triangular meet at the Watertown Civic Arena.
The Tigers amassed 137.950 points to finish second to Watertown in the four-team event. The Arrows finished with a winning total of 147.300 points. Aberdeen Central was third at 134.650.
“It feels good to have a night where all the girls excelled in their events,” Huron coach Julie King said. “We capped the night off with four no-fall beat routines — Kaitlyn King, Emily Lord, Kassie Decker and Erica Zell.
“I was very proud of the team tonight,” she said. “It feels great to walk out of the gym seeing their efforts.”
Myah Morris of Watertown recorded the top score in each of the four events en route to winning the all-around with a score of 38.500. She had a 9.800 on the vault, 9.300 on the bars, 9.750 on the beam and 9.650 in the floor exercise.
Brooke Bollinger of Watertown was second in the all-around at 36.200, followed by Huron’s Erica Zell, who turned in a personal-best effort with a 36.100.
Rounding out the top five in the all-around were Aspyn Lundquist of Aberdeen Central in fourth with a 34.950 and Kassie Decker of Huron with a 34.200.
Emily Lord and Sarah Christenson were eighth and 10th, respectively, for the Tigers in the all-around with scores of 33.850 and 33.000.
Huron had three of the top five finishers on the beam. Zell led the way with a 9.450 to finish second, while Decker turned in a 9.200 to finish tied for third and Lord was fifth with a 9.150.
Decker and Lord had personal-best scores on the beam for the Tigers, along with King, who had an 8.750 to finish eighth. Decker’s score also secured a spot in the state meet for the individual competition on the beam.
Christenson recorded a personal-best score of 9.000 to finish fourth for Huron on the vault, while Zell finished tied for fifth with an 8.900. Decker was tied for seventh at 8.800.
Zell turned in the top score for the Tigers on the bars with an 8.250 to finish seventh. Lord used an 8.100 to share the ninth spot.
In the floor exercise, Zell was fourth at 9.500, while Decker finished tied for eighth at 8.950.
Watertown also won the junior varsity competition with a score of 130.55. Huron was second at 107.400, followed by Aberdeen Central at 103.400.
Jamee Kattner had a no-fall routine on the beam for Huron to finish third with a 7.950. Nightin Day also recorded a no-fall routine for the Tigers.
Leah Pyle finished eighth on the beam and floor exercise for Huron with scores of 7.150 and 7.600, respectively.
The Huron JV will return to action Saturday at an invitational in Mitchell, while the varsity will be off until the Eastern South Dakota Conference Meet on Feb. 3 in Aberdeen.
