City approves two variances

Posted

HURON — In a brief meeting on Monday night, the Huron City Commission focused most of its time on two variance requests to open the meeting.

The first variance was filed by Sierra Tschetter on behalf of Elevate Studio, located at 2359 Dakota Ave. S. The variance was to allow Tschetter to offer microblading as part of her business.

This was approved.

The second variance regarding construction of a six-foot tall fence at 1808 Cardinal Ln. Due to the high traffic and presence of schools nearby, city planner and city inspector both recommended approval, and the commission followed suit by approving the fence.

Dennis Bennett, assistant city engineer, presented a payment request by BX Civil & Construction, Inc. for the work being done on Dakota Ave. The payment was for $202,293.58 and was approved. Bennett did state that the water main is in and tested in the current construction area. While not part of this payment information, Bennett also mentioned that 14 downtown businesses chose to update their sewer hookup as part of the construction, and this has gone well so far.

Commissioners also:
• Approved a special event on sale alcoholic beverage license filed by Top Floor for the Chamber mixer at Dakotaland Museum, 930 3rd St. SW, on July 9.
• Approved the hire of Joshua Sterrett as a part-time police officer.
• Approved the hire of Adison Gross as a gymnastics assistant with Parks & Recreation.
• Approved the hire of Gracie Culver for a temporary position in the city finance office.

• Approved city and board committee appointments.

The Solid Waste Department announced hours and pickup schedule for the Independence Day holiday. Garbage and recycling bins normally picked up on Thursday will be picked up on Wednesday, July 3. The rubble site will be closed Thursday in observance of the holiday.

The commission adjourned the public meeting and met in an executive session regarding contractual information.
