Huron fifth at state tournament

RAPID CITY — The Huron girls’ tennis team narrowly missed another fourth-place finish at the Class A State Tournament, which concluded Tuesday.

With a total of 294 points, the Tigers finished just three points shy of Rapid City Christian for the fourth spot in the 11-team field.

After finishing as the runner-up for the past two seasons, St. Thomas More won its first Class A state title with 488 points.

Sioux Falls Christian, which was the defending champion, was second at 443.5, followed by Vermillion at 355.

Freshman Idella Meyer was the highest finisher for Huron in the singles competition. After suffering back-to-back 6-4 losses to top-seeded Sophia Heynen in the semifinals, she pulled out a 10-9 (4) victory against third-seeded Adrain Hand of Pierre in the third-place match.

Meyer also teamed with senior Madeline Kleinsasser to finish third in No. 3 doubles. After top-seeded St. Thomas More rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 win in the semifinals, the Huron duo, which was the fourth seed, tallied a 10-6 win against second-seeded Sioux Falls Christian to claim the spot.

The Tigers had a trio of fourth-place finishers in singles.

Senior AnneClaire Rubish, who won the Spirit of Max Award for the Tigers, suffered 6-3 and 6-4 losses to second-seeded Annika Barnett of Vermillion in the semifinals at No. 1 and was defeated 10-5 by fourth-seeded Athena Franciliso of St. Thomas More for third place.

Sophomore Say Glay, who was the fourth seed for the Tigers at No. 2, suffered 6-3 and 6-4 setbacks to top-seeded Shriya Gangineni of St. Thomas More in the semifinals. She was then defeated 10-6 by second-seeded Mackenzie Boyle of Sioux Falls Christian in the third-place match.

Senior Ann Hoek came up on the short end of a pair of 6-4 decisions against top-seeded Amity Strand of St. Thomas More in the semifinals at No. 3. She then suffered a 10-4 setback against third-seeded Kasey Lemstra of Sioux Falls Christian in the third-place match.

Senior Paw Kler Moo was fifth for Huron at No. 4. She opened the day with a 10-2 win against Miranda Gonyo of Madison and then defeated seventh-seeded Amara Dell of Pierre 10-2 to claim the fifth spot.

Kleinsasser was sixth for the Tigers at No. 5. She opened the day with a 10-6 victory against Payton Lamp of Milbank, but was edged 10-9 (2) by Danielle VanderDussen of Sioux Falls Christian in the fifth-place match.

Glay and Moo combined to finish fourth for Huron in No. 2 doubles. Third-seeded Sioux Falls Christian handed the duo 6-3, 7-6 (2) setbacks in the semifinals and they were edged 10-9 (4) by top-seeded St. Thomas More in the third-place match.

After winning their first match of the day 10-7 against Aberdeen Roncalli, Rubish and Hoek, who were seeded fifth in No. 1 doubles for the Tigers, defeated Pierre 10-7 to claim the fifth spot.
