Tigers fourth after Day 1 at state

RAPID CITY — A pair of doubles teams for Huron will be playing for third place at the Class A State Tennis Tournament, which concludes today in Rapid City.

With four players reaching the semifinals in singles, the Tigers are sitting fourth after the opening day of the two-day event.

St. Thomas More leads the standings with 320, while defending champion Sioux Falls Christian is second at 284. Rapid City Christian is third at 238, followed by Huron at 232 and Vermillion at 226.

After receiving a bye in the opening round, Huron’s No. 2 doubles team of Say Glay and Paw Kler Moo used set wins of 6-4 and 6-3 to get past Aberdeen Roncalli.

However, in the semifinals, the second-seeded Glay and Moo were upset by third-seeded Sioux Falls Christian 6-3, 7-6 (2).

Glay and Moo will now face top-seeded St. Thomas More, which was upset in the semifinals by fourth-seeded Rapid City Christian, for third place.

Using set wins of 6-2 and 6-3, Huron’s No. 3 doubles team of Madeline Kleinsasser and Idella Meyer got past fifth-seeded Rapid City Christian in their opening match.

The Tigers then faced top-seeded St. Thomas More in the semifinals and took the match to a tiebreaker before being handed the setback. The set scores were 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.

Kleinsasser and Meyer will face second-seeded Sioux Falls Christian for third place today.

In No. 1 doubles, AnneClaire Rubish and Ann Hoek forced a tiebreaker in their opening match against fourth-seeded Vermillion. After dropping the opening set 6-3, Rubish and Hoek rallied for 6-2 win the second set, but Vermillion prevailed with a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker.

Rubish and Hoek will now face ninth-seeded Aberdeen Roncalli in the fifth-place semifinals today.

In singles, four players reached the semifinals for Huron.

Rubish, who is the third seed in the first flight, cruised past sixth-seeded Bailey Jessen of Pierre with set scores of 6-1 and 6-0. She will face second-seeded Annika Barnett of Vermillion in the semifinals.

Glay, who is the fourth seed at No. 2, used set scores of 6-4 and 6-2 to get past fifth-seeded Sienna Maxwell of Madison in her first match. She will face top-seeded Shriya Gangineni of St. Thomas More in the semifinals.

Hoek, who is the fourth seed at No. 3, used set wins of 6-2 and 6-4 to get past fifth-seeded Abby Hanson in her first match.

She will now face top-seeded Amity Strand of St. Thomas More in the semifinals.

Meyer, which is the fifth seed at No. 6, opened the tournament with set wins of 6-2 and 6-4 against fourth-seeded Abigail Oaks of St. Thomas More. She will face top-seeded Sophia Heynen of Sioux Falls Christian in the semifinals.

Moo will be aiming for fifth place in flight four singles. Fourth-seeded Eisley Roark of Sioux Falls Christian defeated Moo 6-2 and 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Moo will now face eighth-seeded Miranda Gonyo of Madison in the fifth-place semifinals.

In the third flight, third-seeded Kleinsasser was edge 7-5 and 6-4 by sixth-seeded Marissa Heidecker of Rapid City Christian.

She will face seventh-seeded Payton Lamp of Milbank in the fifth-seed semifinals.

The final day of competition begins at 8 a.m., today.
