HURON — The James Valley Christian Vikings, seeded second in the Class “A” state soccer playoffs, scored a first-round victory over the seventh-seeded St. Thomas More Cavaliers Tuesday at JVC.

The game was scoreless for the first 30 minutes before Gavin Waldner assisted on a pair of goals to Isaac Fast, the first in the 32nd minute and the second in the 34th minute. Kolby VanDerWerff put in a goal at the 38-minute mark on an assist by Keeghann Hood to put JVC up 3-0 at half.

The Vikings did not score in the second half, but they did keep the Cavs (5-9-1) down to just one goal, scored in the 78th minute.

Jonah Niederbaumer had five saves in goal for the Vikings as JVC outshot St. Thomas More 20-9.

The Vikings move to 11-4 and will play Saturday at JVC against third-seeded Freeman Academy, who defeated West Central 6-0 in the opening round on Tuesday. JVC won two meetings this season between the team.
