Mitchell sweeps Huron 16U in pair

HURON — Huron 16U jumped out early in both halves of the doubleheader Tuesday against Mitchell 16U, but came away dropping both games at Memorial Ballpark.

In the opener, the Huron offense was clicking early, putting up a pair of runs in the second and four runs in the third to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Mitchell scored in each of the next three innings to knot the game at six.

Huron then got an infield single from Gavin Waldner that led to Waldner on second base due to an error on the play. Waldner moved to third on a balk and then Cooper Bischoff lifted a long fly ball that was caught, but it was deep enough to score Waldner and give Huron a 7-6 lead.

Unfortunately, Mitchell was then able to a pair of errors on a steal attempt to bring a runner all the way around from first to score in the top of the seventh and Huron was unable to score a runner in the bottom of the inning, forcing extras. Mitchell was able to push a run across in the top of the inning and Huron went down in order in the bottom of the inning to give Mitchell the 8-7 victory.

Elijah Shreeve went 5 1/3 innings for Huron, allowing six runs on 11 hits, striking out two. Nolan Stahly closed out the game on the mound, throwing 2 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits.

Carter Porisch reached base three times for Huron, with a double, single, and a walk. Waldner, Jeremy Hofer, and Chase Schuchhardt each had a pair of singles. Waldner added a steal.

Huron would jump out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings of the second game before Mitchell scored four in the top of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Huron would tie the score in the bottom of the fourth, but the visitors would score six more runs to claim an 11-5 win.

Hofer allowed five runs over 3 1/3 innings on two hits and four walks, striking out four. Crayton Siedschlag tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on one hit and five walks. Oakley Anderson finished the game with an inning pitched, allowing one unearned run on two walks.

Shreeve had a strong game at the plate with three singles and a stolen base. Siedschlag had a double and a walk.

Anderson Porisch had a single and a walk. Anderson and Waldner each stole a base.

The Tigers (9-8) are off until the Sioux Falls Mid Summer Classic tournament, beginning July 12.
