RAPID CITY — Third-seeded Colman-Egan rallied for a 3-2 victory against fifth-seeded Wolsey-Wessington to win the consolation championship Saturday at the Class B State Volleyball Tournament, which was held in Summit Arena at the Monument.

After falling into a 2-0 hole with set wins of 25-22 and 25-20 by Wolsey-Wessington, the Hawks put together back-to-back set wins of 25-12 and 25-20 to even the match. They then needed yet another rally in the fifth set to pull out the victory with a 15-11 win.

Behind some strong play at the net from senior Kailynn Dorris and junior Samara Clemente, Wolsey-Wessington was able to set the tone early in the match. Dorris and Clemente combined for five kills and sophomore Kendal Uttecht capped a 5-0 run with a set kills to give the Lady Warbirds a 9-2 lead in the opening set.

Despite facing its biggest deficit of the match, Colman-Egan would rally back into contention with an 8-2 run fueled by its heavy hitters at the net.

Senior Daniela Lee sparked the run with a kills and a block kill for the Hawks, who were able to narrow their deficit to just a point at 11-10.

The Lady Warbirds were able to hold on to the slight advantage until Colman-Egan took its first lead of the match at 18-17 on a kill by Lee. However, Wolsey-Wessington responded with a 4-0 run to regain the upper hand. A pair of kills by Clemente, followed by a kill from Lainey Uttecht and an ace serve from Dorris netted the Lady Warbirds a 21-18 advantage.

The Hawks weren’t done quite yet, however, as they climbed back to tie the match at 22 all on a kill by Elaina Rhode and a block by Lee.

Wolsey-Wessington coach Lindy Uttecht used her final timeout of the set to squash the rally and the Lady Warbirds claimed a 25-22 win in the opening set on a tip kill by Clemente.

The second set turned out to be more highly contested as neither team was able to build more that a 3-point advantage until late in the set. .

An ace serve by Dorris game Wolsey-Wessington its first lead in the match at 6-5, but the slight advantage would tip back into Colman-Egan’s favor rather quickly on a tip kill by lead and a block by Rhode.

After providing the Lady Warbirds with its second lead at 11-10 with a tip kill, junior Tatum Luce used an ace to make it 13-11 moments later.

The two teams would trade points until Clemente used her power at the net to give Wolsey-Wessington its biggest advantage at 16-13.

The Hawks managed to get back to within two points down the stretch, but that’s as close as they would get. A kill by Dorris, followed by a block from Clemente enabled the Lady Warbirds to stretch the lead to 23-19. They capped the 25-20 win with back-to-back kills by Clemente and Dorris to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

It appeared Wolsey-Wessington was on its way to a sweep after an ace serve from Luce established a 6-2 advantage in the third set.

Hitting errors combined with a net violated by the Lady Warbirds allowed Colman-Egan to change a 9-6 deficit into a 12-9 lead midway through the third set.

Wolsey-Wessington would manage just three more points after that, as Lee took over a the net for the Hawks. She accounted for six points in an 11-0 run Colman-Egan used to claim the third set 25-12 and avoid the sweep.

The momentum stayed with the Hawks in the fourth set, as they led for a majority of the set to even the match.

A kill by sophomore Brynlee Landis capped a 5-0 run, which netted Colman-Egan an 8-5 lead in the fourth set. They would never trail after that point.

Wolsey-Wessington would narrow its deficit to just a point at 12-11 on a kill by Dorris and later to 16-15 on a kill by Clemente, but it was unable to contain the attack at the net by the Hawks down the stretch.

A kill by Landis gave Colman-Egan at 22-18 lead an she had two more kills to secure the 25-20 victory for the Hawks and force the fifth set.

A 6-1 run capped by an ace serve from Landis gave Colman-Egan a 6-3 lead in the fifth set, but the Lady Warbids would score seven unanswered points to build a 10-6 lead.

Four straight kills with two coming from Dorris and two coming from Luce, gave Wolsey-Wessington a 7-6 advantage.

A four-hits violation on the Hawks combined with kills from Dorris and Luce gave the Lady Warbirds their biggest lead of the set at 10-6.

A pair of kills from Lee combined with back-to-back points from junior Anna Zwart pulled Colman-Egan even at 10-10 and another block by Lee netted the lead for the Hawks.

The Lady Warbirds would manage to even the set at 11-11 on a kill by Dorris, but a pair of kills by Landis combined with a block by senior Lanie Mousel and a kill by Lee powered a 4-1 run for Colman-Egan to secure a 15-12 win in the set and earn the consolation title.

Both teams finished the season at 30-6.

Landis finished with 20 kills to lead the Hawks, while Lee had 15 kills. Mousel tallied 25 assists and Kaylee Voelker had 21 assists.

Lee also recorded a pair of solo blocks and eight assisted blocks to go along with 10 digs for Colman-Egan. Presley Luze finished with a team-high 17 digs and Voelker had 14 digs.

Dorris led the way for Wolsey-Wessington with 22 kills, giving her a tourney-high of 67 kills, 11 more than the second-most in the entire state tournament. Clement finished with 17 kills, while Luce had 12 kills.

Kendal Uttecht and Payton Kemnitz finished with 32 and 19 assists, respectively, for the Warbirds. Kendal Uttecht also had a team-high 21 digs, while Shae Uttecht had 18 digs and Lainey Uttecht had 13 digs. Luce had three of the four aces in the match for Wolsey-Wessington.

Lee from Colman-Egan and Dorris from Wolsey-Wessington were named to the Class B All-Tournament Team.
