HURON — Three Huron seniors were named to the All-Eastern South Dakota Conference volleyball team, which was announced Thursday.

Earning the honors for the Tigers, won the ESD title during the regular season with a 7-1 record, were Tenley Buddenhagen, Libby Rounds and Brooke Schiltz.

Buddenhagen is a four-year starter for Huron and has spent the past three seasons as the setter in the varsity lineup. During her senior season, which consisted onf 18 matches and a total of 68 sets played, she amassed 622 assists, 50 ace serves, 238 digs and 71 kills.

“Tenley is what most would be considered undersized with a stature of 5-foot-5, yet can make up with what she lacks in size with her vertical jump and quickness,” said Shelly Buddenhagen, who doubles as her coach and mother. “Tenley’s speed and athleticism is a catalyst for the Tigers’ up-tempo offense, which provides her under-sized hitters opportunities for success against much taller front lines.

“She has the ability to make an out-of-system pass look like an in-system pass, putting her teammates in a position to be successful,” she said. “She is also known to have a defensive skill set.

Rounds, who competed in 16 matches and a total of 59 sets this season for the Tigers, recorded 130 kills, with a .355 hitting percentage and had 40 blocks.

“Libby is an undersized player on a comparable basis statewide, het she has proven to have the capability to run a faster, up-tempo offense and impact matches,” Buddenhagen said. “Defensively, she has changed the way other teams play with her blocking, despite playing against taller players.”

Schiltz racked up 213 kills  and a .181 hitting percentage during 19 matches and a total of 71 sets this season for Huron. She also had 155 digs, 47 blocks and 29 ace serves.

“Brooke has proven to be one of the most versatile and well-rounded players in the state with her offensive and defensive skill sets,” Buddenhagen said. “As a right side pin hitter and defender, she has been a threat with her power yet is able to make an impact with her defensive skills both as a blocker and back row defender. She is a huge player in her team’s success.”

Watertown, which also finished at 7-1 in the ESD had seniors Maggie Heesch, Jadyn Hoftiezer and Anna Johnson named to the team.

The remainder of the team consisted of seniors Brooklyn Kusler and Hannah Keil of Aberdeen Central; senior Brooklyn Grage and junior Kazi Ellingston of Brandon Valley; junior Abby Meister of Harrisburg; and senior Cameryn Logan of Mitchell.

Seniors Brittany Birgen of Brookings and Miah Kienholz of Pierre earned honorable mention.

Behind Huron and Watertown in the final ESD standings were Aberdeen Central at 6-2, Brandon Valley at 6-2, Harrisburg at 4-4, Brookings at 2-6, Mitchell at 2-6, Pierre at 1-7 and Yankton at 1-7.
